I had been been more drawn into movies and books, and recently was not interested in blogging. The comments from various people and the visits regarding my various posts are the reason I write this post.

I have seen quite a lot of movies in this break, the ones which are fresh in mind are few. Bicyle thieves, Sarkar, X Men, Slum Dog Millionaire, Abhiyum Naanum, Lambs for Lions, Sex and the City (The title doesn’t depict the Story). Let me write a review for the latest sensation, Slumdog Millionaire.

Slumdog Millionaire – Review

Cast: Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, Tanay Chheda, Saurabh Shukla, Mahesh Manjrekar

Director: Danny Boyle,

Co Director: Loveleen Tandan (India)

Music: A R Rahman

Duration: 120 Min

I will review the movie in my style with topics as Story, Screenplay, Actors, Music, Miscellaneous

Story:

The story is inspired by the game show, “Kaun Baneha Crorepathi” hosted by Amitabh Bhachan in Star Plus channel. However that show even was adaptation from various western reality shows. The programme originated in the United Kingdom, where it was hosted by Chris Tarrant.  The plot of the story is based on a novel “Q & A” published in 2005 by Vikas Swarup, an Indian diplomat.

The story is about interrogation of a possible cheating that would have been done by a next door contestant, who with no great general  knowledge goes on to win the show. The movie starts with the interrogation of Jamal ( Dev Patel ) just before the final round of the game, in a local police station. Jamal acts calm and quietly explains how during various walks of his life, he has got all the answers to the various questions asked in the show.  This narration unfolds the life of a boy grown in a slum area in Mumbai ( then Bombay). His brother Salim (Mathur Mittal) and his love Latika (Frieda) join together when during a riot in the slum area takes the life of Jamal and Salim’s mother.

The three and various other orphan children are taken by in name of ‘Taking Care’ by thugs who use them for their welfare. During the process of making them blind and asking them to beg in the streets, Salim and Jamal escape with trying to save Latika ending in vain. Jamal has his love for Latika grooming from his childhood.  Both turn as tourist guides in Agra, where they reach accidently. Jamal does not give up and searches Latika for years and finally finds her in a brothal area of Mumbai. with the help of Salim, he rescues Latika killing the thugs (the same group who blinded the children). Salim fights with Jamal and takes Latika with him, aftet which Jamal grows as a Chai wala (Tea seller).

Years later Jamal meets Salim to find their brotherly affection redeem and as Jamal asks about Latika, Salim sulks and tells he left her early. However Jamal traces her to be in Salim’s boss’ house. He meets her disguised as a butcher boy and promises his ever lasting love and tells he would wait every day in a railway station at a particular time.

Jamal accidently gets into the  game show, when he gets the hotline call during serving tea in a BPO. Anil Kapoor hosts the game show and teases Jamal from the start of the show, being a Chaiwala  and participating in the show. Jamal’s participation in the show has other plans, to find Latika.

How the game show ends , did he wins the final round after interrogation, does he ends up with his love are the the ones that cover the climax.

Screen Play:

The main booster for the movie is the screen play. The story for how he answers all the questions before the final round, gets unfolded, in conjuction with his child hood life.  This has been blend perfectly with no nonsense scenes mixing up. The mumbai slum area scenes are so lively and the various ill forces are depicted withe awe and ease.

Actors:

Better than any, the child artists who perform as Jamal, Salim has performed extraordinary. So is the Salim character mid aged person’s acting stands tall. Dev Patel has maintained a calm and composed character in the film, with oozing confidence for his love and patience during the police interoggation. Latika ( Frieda ) speaks a lecture with her eyes, though she has not many dialogues. Not of great beauty, she suits perfectly for the female lead in the film.

Overall, the artist selection seems impeccable.

Music:

The music of A R Rahman for the ‘Original Score’ for this film has won the Golden Globe award, and has been nominated for the Oscars. His two songs in the film are among the three which might sweep the Oscar for best song.

Personally I believe, A R Rahman has put a ‘good’ music suitable for the film, but this has not been his best. The songs from Bollywood (Hindi) and Kollywood (Tamizh) stand MUCH TALLER than this music. A R Rahman would have a galaxy of golden globes if that would have been recognised.

Miscellaneous:

Well, I ll giev various links to dig the topic to. For the critics for the film from various sites and community, visit, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slumdog_Millionaire . Also IMDB would give a bunch of info regard to the film.

Overall:

Personally, I rate this film as 80/100

You can share your views on the film with your valuable comments.

Hi

I was pretty impressed by a recent mail I got which had some brilliant Advertisements, I have short listed some, mainly the ones which speaks for a social cause.

Ad industry has been growing in technology and creativity year after year. Just an ad with a big celebrity doesn’t touch the heart of people.

Some ads which I still remember right from my child hood are,

  1. Nirma Washing powder – A good rhym like song
  2. Fevicol ads – Many good ones here – Eg. Unbreakable egg laid by hen eating grain from fevicol basket.
  3. Colgate – The tag “Preferred by Dentist” has made the toothpaste so popular
  4. Complan – Focussing on the growth of height – Will tempt parents who need children to grow fast.
  5. Rasna – The cute girl
  6. Preethi mixie – in Tamil Nadu – “Preethi ku naan guarantee”
  7. Titan – Brand Music
  8. Airtel – Right from mobile to Digital TV now – The AR Rahman magic music has lifted its brand
  9. Saint Gobain – The Monk puffing out air to find the glass and the washing woman throwing water to clean the glass
  10. Vodafone – Hutch dog – “Wherever you go, our network follows”
  11. Boost – Boost is the secret of my energy – Our energy – Made cricket fans (esp Sachin fans like me) kids to go for it – They also often promote the brand by giving Cricket bat and ball for it. I ve even waited very patiently for it and insisted my parents to go for Boost coz of this.
  12. Lion Dates – Ads palyed a huge role when the Dates business was just on – Again in tamil – “Singam pola strength enakku”
  13. Gold Winner oil
  14. Garnier – Take Care
  15. Raymond – The complete Man – Classy ad impressing the big boys.
  16. Fair & Lovely – Fairnes in 6 weeks – I dont think any middle class and up home would have been without this product before the recent surge in cosmetic industry.

I have  a small poll here to choose your favourite ad of the above mentioned. You can choose multiple choices too.

Cheers,

CK.

Hi

Pleasure in meeting you all again through this post.

This time I am on with a fresh review for Samsung f480., codenamed the Tocco. I am not sure why this phone isn’t famous yet, with loads of features. Well, I had pondered more than enough for getting tis toy. I had enough dilemmas for more than 3 weeks for choosing this phone for,

1. I am an ardent Nokia fan.

2. The high price of the tocco.

Finally I decided to gift this phone for birthday., dont be shocked its only for me again. I recently bought this one for Rs. 18k (Mem card Rs. 600 extra for a 4GB ~ get it only at Ritchie street, chennai at this price 😉 )

Design:

I ll give a perfect 10 for the design of Tocco, this has made me switch over from the Nokia club to the Samsung fun club. And to add brain to the beauty the phone comes with a handy leather cover which ptotects your screen well. Even if you keep the phone on both sides, only the cover touches the ground.

Features and Performace:

  1. 2.8″ Touch screen – 262k Colours – Little less than 16M popularity of Nokia but the large screen makes you feel comfi and not be jealous of other phones.
  2. 5 MP Camera – with auto focus, dont expect a gr8 cam, it is a 5 MP cam only during shoots at good light, the flash present can be absent instead 😦 .
  3. Widgets – Pretty same like the active standby option in Nokia, but it s a breezy feel to drag and drop the apps from widget to mobtop (like desktop 😉 ) and back to wigdet/ One negative here is you can only have predefined apps in widget. They have enough widgets upon my opinion.
  4. Music Player – It s a 8/10 score for music player with various presets (Jazz, Pop, Classic, Wide and the best one for me – Surround, and ofcourse normal). They also bundle in-ear earphones, coming pretty handy.
  5. Widescreen video view – If you plan to buy stuffs like iPod video player (4GB) like and a phone, you can  blindly choose the Samsung f480 instead, the f series normally is special for video and this impressed me as well.  Samsung bundles ‘Multimedia Manager’ easy to convert video songs and stuffs, it supports MPEG-4, 3GP popularly and some more samsung formats. No blurs and delays.
  6. Good battery life – A full charge and moderate use (video, music, 2 hous of call a day) will eventually make the tocco last for 2 days. Pretty enough
  7. Good web browsing experience ( Only good since the timed out error occurs while browsing busy pages like cricket scores now and then). Boss, I can stream Youtube videos and vie ( Ofcourse with 2G support only in India, it struggles a bit – wait till it unleashes its potential with 3G)
  8. Email with push like facility (30 min (or more) interval setting for retrieving mails)
  9. The messagin is initially vague but gets used with the 1-2-3 keyboard intead of QWERTY one, personally I liked dis since, keeping QWERTY would occupy more space and hence cant access it with hand alone.
  10. 232 MB internal memory – upto 8GB microSD cars support.
  11. FM Player – wit RDS (By the way, what is RDS 😉 )
  12. Office docuement viewer ( Doc, Excel, PPT, PDF ) Enough isn’t it.
  13. A good Organiser.
  14. 7 simultaneous alarms.
  15. RSS reader, Calculator, Convertor, World clock, Stop watch, Task, Memo, Voice recorder.
  16. Google maps access via application ( No navigation facility though)

– ves:

The camera is not sound as it should be, especially you need not even test the phone during night. It sucks.Well in day time and with lights, it is good. Camera only gets 6/10 for its night performance.

Other than camera, the photo call facility couls have been full screen.

No 3.5 mm jack direct facility (but the able provided has 3.5 mm facility)

Verdict:

With a price tag of 18k , the contestants for tocco are Nokia N78, Nokia N82 (both suffer from bad keypads), N95 (has poor battery life) but more features. My another choice was N82 , it had loads of features (esp cam is greatest of all) but it weighs like a mini brick and keypad sucks. N78 has beauty but less brains.

The lowest priced touch screen phone with 2.8″ displaywith support for 16:9 video play and an above average cam. I made the choice based on these parameters., and doesn”t regret for any. It is your choice now.

Dear buddy

I am getting little bored nowadays and not getting the mood to write posts.. Unlike the prev post, there glowed a bulb in my mind to write a post on the topic. This post is just to share some info, experiences and my new interests.

Coming to the info part,

1. Green Book

More and more campaigning are going in many parts of the world for Energy saving and Carbon emission curbing.. I came across an interesting book, a ebook and a green boook, which I hope we all must go through and try to use as much as we CAN.

http://www.morganstanley.com/about/community/littlegreenebook/

2. Digantar.

An article about a new schooling method in India. How a couple’s desire for building a school with REAL LIFE learning and methods, helped bring down Female illiteracy of 98% down to 12% in a remote village. I liked the primary concept of equalities among the casts, only when a child grows with all level of families of income, he/she (Thanks to Naga 🙂 ) does knows what is real world.

See the today’s rich adults., many of the adults who have been grown up in international public schools, TILL AN AGE, does not know what is the value of the money. How a Rs. 1500 note given for a ‘Bowling’ session + Food can help feed a whole orphanage for a meal. The environment they grow, from child hood to rich schools, which charge 1 or 2 Lakh / Annum for <blah blah> they does not know the real pain a co existing child gets to work for earning his daily bread. If you justify it is of personal interest and for entertainment, and why should I alone care for it, you are perfectly Irresponsible.  I dont blame all such adults, there are people from their stature doing many good support activities for under previleged. Hats off to them.

Well, too much of my words, read the article.

Coming to the experience part,

I happened to watch (the more appropriate word would be MOVED BY) a movie I watched recently, Jaane Tu. I like the movie very much,

  • not alone because of the great enthusiasm it brought out soon after watching the movie.
  • not alone because of the crisp and cool humor in Father Son sentiment and Dialogue
  • not alone because it makes me feel, ‘Where s my Love?’.. Well I ll need to put a * here
  • not alone because Genelia is one of my favourite heroins.

There are many reasons why I liked it.

My new interests….

To be frank, I am very poor in movies stuff., be it old tamil movies, or famous Engish movies or Block buster Hindi movies, I have seen very choosy movies. And since ipo neraya neram konjam vetti ah irukarathunala, I have recently started colleting a lot of movies which I can watch in that time..

Present list I ve bought and yet to watch is (You can see various Genres)

  1. Die Hard I, II
  2. Wanted
  3. Schindler’s list
  4. Juno
  5. Kung fu Panda (missed to watch in Theatre)
  6. Forrest Gump
  7. Old James bondmovies (First 007)
  8. Dil to Pagal Hai
  9. Kabhi kushi Kabhi Gam
  10. Kaho naa pyar hai
  11. Rang De Basanthi
  12. Maha Nadihan 😉
  13. Kaaki Sattai
  14. Sarkar ( I watched Sarkar Raj, inspired by its dialogues I ve bought this)

And some more movies I forgot.. Konjam konjama paakalam.. Mudunja ethachum review panren.

Sari, indha varathuku aruvai potachu nenakaren.
